Bonsai trees were originally from China over a thousand years ago. It was a practice to grow single specimen tress in pots. Somes the trunks grew to be rugged, gnarled trunks which often looked like animals, dragons and birds. There are many great myths surrounding the Chinese bonsai. Soon Japan adopted the idea of planting a tree into a pot too, but they took it to another level, and refined the art of keeping a bonsai. Bonsai means 'tree in a pot'. Bonsai growing is an art form and is a passion of the Chinese aristocracy, monks and nobility for hundreds of years, however eventually it became popular Chinese society.
